Jake Mumme, Diesel & Automotive Engine Overhaul Instructor

Meet Jake Mumme

We are excited to spotlight Jake Mumme, Diesel & Automotive Engine Overhaul Instructor at Washington County Community College. Jake has been in his role for almost 6 months, and Jake has quickly become a strong presence in the program. As a graduate of WCCC, he brings a valuable perspective to the classroom, combining firsthand student experience with real-world mechanical expertise.

A Day in Jake’s Role

Jake’s favorite part of teaching is mentoring students and helping them better understand their direction in life. He enjoys guiding students as they discover their strengths and build confidence in their abilities.

Jake’s own educational journey was not a straight path and because of this, Jake connects easily with students who may still be figuring things out. He emphasizes that success can take many different forms and is passionate about helping students find the path that works best for them.

What Makes Jake’s Program Stand Out

The Diesel & Automotive Engine Overhaul program is centered on hands-on learning. Students spend the majority of their time in the shop building, disassembling, and rebuilding engines, gaining a deep understanding of how each component works together.

One of the most unique aspects of the program is the opportunity for students to bring in their own engines to rebuild. While the shop provides engines, working on personal equipment creates a stronger connection to the learning process and adds real-world relevance.

Students develop practical skills in measurement, tolerances, diagnostics, and maintenance. Jake is also focused on building strong relationships with industry partners, helping to create pathways for internships and employment after graduation.

Students also have the option to continue their education by completing an additional year to earn an associate degree in Mechanical Technology. This can be achieved by pursuing further study in Automotive Technology, Heavy Equipment Operations, Diesel & Automotive Engine Overhaul, or Powersports Small Engine Technician, expanding their skill set and career opportunities.

Program Outcomes and Opportunities

The Diesel & Automotive Engine Overhaul program prepares students for careers in the engine servicing industry through a strong foundation in both theory and hands-on practice. Instruction covers diesel and gasoline engine operation, as well as techniques for disassembly, inspection, reassembly, and troubleshooting.

Students learn to use shop manuals, diagnostic instruments, reference charts, and specialized tools to identify and repair equipment malfunctions. The program also emphasizes critical skills in engine overhaul, electrical and electronic systems, and fuel systems.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of the program are prepared for entry-level positions in a wide range of industries, including automotive service facilities, construction and logging companies, farm machinery and heavy equipment dealerships, marine engine companies, and agricultural operations.

With experience, graduates may advance into roles such as shop supervisor, service manager, field service technician, master mechanic, technical representative, sales representative, or even business owner.

Jake’s Journey in His Field

After high school, Jake began his education at the University of Maine, where he realized a traditional university setting was not the right fit for him. He later discovered his passion at WCCC, graduating in 2022 from both the Powersports Small Engine Technician and Diesel & Automotive Engine Overhaul programs.

His journey allows him to relate closely to students who are still finding their direction. In addition to teaching, Jake works part-time as a mechanic at a boat yard in Eastport, Maine, bringing current, real-world experience into the classroom.

Outside of Work

Jake can be described as hands-on and family oriented. Outside of the classroom, he enjoys spending time with his family and working on mechanical projects. He takes pride in staying active with hands-on work and is also a big sports fan, especially baseball.

Three Words to Describe Jake

Driven, Approachable, Hands-on

Looking Toward the Future

Jake is excited to continue growing the Diesel & Automotive Engine Overhaul program. He hopes to expand opportunities for students by increasing industry partnerships and adding more tools and equipment to the shop.

His focus is on building a strong, sustainable program that equips students with the skills, experience, and connections they need for successful careers.
