Ron O’Brien, Automotive Technology Instructor

Meet Ron O’Brien

We are excited to spotlight Ron O’Brien, a dedicated instructor at Washington County Community College, who has been an integral part of the college since 2000. With 26 years of teaching experience as the program’s instructor at WCCC, Ron brings a deep passion for hands-on learning and student success.

Ron’s extensive background and lifelong interest in working with engines make him an invaluable resource for students pursuing careers in the automotive and mechanical fields.

A Day in Ron’s Role

Ron’s favorite part of teaching is watching his students grow and progress throughout the year. He is passionate about helping students build confidence as they develop their skills, regardless of their starting point. Whether students are brand new to working on vehicles or already have some experience, Ron enjoys guiding them along their individual paths. One of the most rewarding aspects of his role is seeing students discover their direction. Whether that’s completing a one-year certificate or continuing on to earn an associate degree in Mechanical Technology or Passenger Vehicle Specialty.

What Makes Ron’s Program Stand Out

Ron’s program offers a welcoming environment where students can begin with little to no prior experience and leave with strong technical knowledge and confidence. He meets students where they are, tailoring his instruction to help each individual reach their goals.

Students gain hands-on experience working on live vehicles for customers, allowing them to develop both technical skills and customer service experience. Throughout the program, they progress from learning the basics to working with advanced computer diagnostics, as well as electric and hybrid vehicle technology.

In addition, students have the opportunity to earn ASE certification and obtain their Maine State Inspection License. Giving them a competitive edge as they enter the workforce.

Ron’s Journey in His Field

Ron’s passion for working with engines started early in life. As he puts it, he’s always been interested in “anything with nuts and bolts.” He graduated from WCCC’s Diesel Engine Service and Construction programs in 1982, the same year he launched his own business in Calais. He credits WCCC with giving him the push to pursue his dreams, and today, he is proud to give back by helping the next generation of students find their own paths in the industry.

Outside of Work

When he’s not teaching, Ron enjoys spending quality time with his family. He also loves motorcycle rides, snowmobile trips, and traveling whenever he gets the chance. These activities help him recharge and bring the same energy and enthusiasm back into the classroom.
