Scott Wheelock, Welding Technology Instructor

Meet Scott Wheelock

We are excited to spotlight Scott Wheelock, a dedicated Welding Instructor at Washington County Community College, who has been an essential part of the college for 6 years. Scott’s passion for welding and his commitment to his students have made him a valuable part of our faculty. He brings with him over 35 years of experience in the field, making him an incredible resource for students.

A Day in Scott’s Role

Scott’s favorite part of teaching is watching students grow from beginners into skilled professionals. He enjoys seeing their confidence build alongside their technical abilities as they progress through the program.

One of the most rewarding parts of his role is helping students secure employment after graduation. Knowing he played a role in their success is what drives his passion for teaching.

What Makes Scott’s Program Stand Out

Scott’s welding program is a 10-month program that offers a unique learning environment with small class sizes and a strong sense of community. This allows for personalized, one-on-one instruction where each student gets the attention they need to succeed. Whether students are new to welding or have prior experience, Scott meets them at their skill level and helps them advance.

Students gain hands-on experience with advanced tools and techniques, including pipe fitting using equipment such as pipe threading machines, mile hogs, and flux core welding systems. Scott emphasizes pipe fitting as a critical skill, giving students an added advantage in the workforce.

His extensive industry experience and strong employer connections also provide students with valuable job placement opportunities after graduation.

Students also have the option to continue their education by completing an additional year to earn an associate degree in Mechanical Technology. This can be achieved by pursuing further study in Automotive Technology, Heavy Equipment Operations, Diesel & Automotive Engine Overhaul, or Powersports Small Engine Technician, expanding their skill set and career opportunities.

Program Outcomes and Opportunities

The Welding Technology program prepares students with the technical knowledge and hands-on experience needed for careers in welding and metal fabrication. Instruction focuses on producing high-quality welds in all positions using oxyacetylene and electric arc welding, as well as selecting appropriate materials and filler rods for various applications.

Students are prepared to earn industry-recognized certifications, including American Welding Society structural stick welding certification, AWS flux core MIG structural certification, and the State of Maine pipe certification. They also develop skills in TIG welding stainless and carbon steel pipe, making them highly competitive in the job market.

Graduates may find employment in shipbuilding, fabrication, construction, and mechanical and maintenance industries, with opportunities to grow into advanced roles as they gain experience.

Upon completion of the program, students are prepared to apply workplace safety procedures; identify welding methods, tools, and equipment; select proper materials and techniques; produce and evaluate high-quality welds; perform TIG welding; and execute pipe fitting techniques including fit-up and tack preparation.

Scott’s Journey in His Field

Scott’s passion for welding began when he enrolled in the program himself in 1982. He quickly developed a love for the trade and went on to build a career spanning more than three decades.

Today, he brings that experience into the classroom, mentoring students and sharing the knowledge he has gained throughout his career. His background and enthusiasm make him a strong role model for aspiring welders.

Outside of Work

Outside the classroom, Scott enjoys spending time outdoors. He is passionate about hunting and fishing and likes staying busy with hands-on projects in his garage.

His hobbies reflect his teaching style, grounded in practical skills, hard work, and real-world application.
