Elijah Smith, TRIO Administrative Specialist and Sports Information Director

Meet Elijah Smith

We’re proud to spotlight Elijah, who joined Washington County Community College in August 2025. Serving as the men’s and women’s assistant basketball coach, sports information director, and administrative specialist for TRIO, Elijah brings energy, dedication, and a student-first mindset to everything he does. His work supports both student-athletes and the broader campus community, helping students stay informed, supported, and on track for success.

Elijah is also a graduate of the University of Maine at Augusta, where he earned his degree in Business Administration, bringing valuable knowledge and perspective to his role.

A Day in Elijah’s Role

On the athletics side, Elijah supports both the men’s and women’s basketball teams. These programs are still growing, with the men’s team entering its third year and the women’s team its second. He helps manage team operations, shares updates, and works closely with student-athletes to ensure they succeed both on the court and in the classroom.

In his role with TRIO, Elijah serves as a reliable point of contact for students who may need extra academic support. He makes himself available to answer questions and guide students who are balancing academics and athletics or facing challenges in subjects like Math and English. He frequently connects students with resources like the study center, where tutors and supplies are available to help them succeed. Elijah is passionate about making sure every student knows where to go and feels comfortable asking for help.

What He Loves Most About WCCC

Elijah is inspired by the growth of WCCC’s athletic programs and the opportunities they create for students. He sees firsthand how the teams continue to develop and is motivated by their potential for the future. He values that WCCC allows students to stay close to home while pursuing both their education and the sport they love. For Elijah, being part of that journey and helping students succeed is what makes his work meaningful.

One moment that has especially stayed with him was when WCCC hosted a baby shower for him and his wife as they prepared for their third child. He shared that this gesture meant a great deal to him and his family, and it reflects the supportive, close-knit community that makes WCCC so special.

Three Words to Describe Elijah

Persistent, Optimistic, and Reliable.

Outside of Work

Outside the office, Elijah enjoys spending quality time with his children and taking advantage of the many fishing spots throughout Washington County. Fishing is one of his favorite ways to relax and recharge.

He also has a strong passion for basketball beyond the college level. He previously started an AAU team in Texas, where he is from, and recently launched a new AAU program in Washington County called ISI Hoops, serving students from 1st through 12th grade. This reflects his ongoing commitment to mentoring young athletes and building opportunities for youth in the community.

Supporting Students Through TRIO

One important aspect of Elijah’s TRIO role that students may not know is related to privacy and support services. If a student has a documented IEP, Elijah is not able to ask about it directly, but students are always welcome to come to him to share that information if they are seeking support. He wants all students to know that it’s okay to ask for help, and that support is always available to those who need it.

Looking Toward the Future

Elijah’s goal is to continue expanding awareness of the opportunities available at WCCC, especially in athletics and student support services. He hopes to keep the community engaged by sharing updates and building excitement around the college’s athletic programs. Most importantly, he wants to help more students recognize the resources available to them and feel confident accessing the support they need to succeed.

Thank you, Elijah, we appreciate you!
