Washington County Community College is proud to highlight the success of our graduate, Jacob Sinford, who earned an Associate of Applied Science in Mechanical Technology with a specialization in Passenger Vehicle and Engine Specialist. He also received a certificate in Powersport/Small Engine Technician in 2023. Jacob’s story is an inspiring example of how pursuing the right education can lead to meaningful career opportunities, all while staying connected to home and community.
Why Did You Choose This Program?
Jacob chose the Mechanical Technology program because it provided an excellent opportunity to learn a new trade while remaining close to home. This balance of gaining valuable skills in a hands-on setting and staying within his local community helped lay the foundation for his career.
Current Occupation: Lead Power-Sports and Outboard Technician
Today, Jacob works as the Lead Power-Sports and Outboard Technician at Tri-Town Marine in Machias, Maine. His role involves overseeing power-sports and outboard engine repairs, ensuring customers receive top-notch service. This position is a direct result of his training at WCCC, where he built a solid foundation in mechanical technology.
How Did Washington County Community College Prepare Him for His Current Role?
Jacob credits Washington County Community College for giving him the hands-on experience needed to succeed in his current role. The structured, controlled learning environment helped him develop practical skills, while also teaching essential organizational skills and record keeping, which are critical in his day-to-day work.
A Recent Accomplishment: Honda Marine Certification
Jacob’s recent accomplishment, becoming Factory Honda Marine Certified, speaks volumes about his dedication and expertise in the field. This certification, along with his promotion to Lead Technician, showcases his growth and the hard work he’s put into his career since graduating from WCCC.
Advice for Current and Prospective Students
Jacob’s advice for current and prospective students is to take full advantage of the resources available to them, especially their instructors. “Use your educator connection as a resource,” he advises. “Value the skills taught while in school but also appreciate the learning process that continues in the workplace setting.” Jacob’s story is proof that hard work, continual learning, and an education can open doors to a successful career.
