Alumni Highlight: Megan Greenlaw- Class of 2020
Washington County Community College is proud to spotlight the inspiring journey of Megan Greenlaw, who earned her Associate of Applied Science in Early Childhood Education in Spring 2020. Megan’s dedication to supporting children and her passion for communication sciences have led her to pursue a master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology. Her story is a powerful example of how a strong foundation in early childhood education can pave the way for meaningful, impactful careers.
Why Did You Choose This Program?
Megan chose the Early Childhood Education program at WCCC after working as an educational assistant in a preschool in St. Stephen, New Brunswick, where she supported children with disabilities. During this time, she observed several Speech Therapy sessions that deeply inspired her and sparked a strong interest in becoming a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist. Recognizing that this career path would require a solid educational foundation, Megan saw the Early Childhood Education program at WCCC as the perfect starting point for achieving her long-term goals in the field of communication sciences and disorders.
Current Occupation: Graduate Student at the University of Western Kentucky
Currently, Megan is completing her final semester of graduate school at the University of Western Kentucky. She is on track to graduate in May 2025 with a master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology. Her graduate studies have allowed her to provide Speech Therapy services in a public elementary school setting, building directly on the knowledge and experiences she gained at WCCC. Megan’s commitment to her professional development continues to be guided by her passion for supporting children’s communication and developmental needs.
How Did Washington County Community College Prepare Her for Her Current Role?
Megan credits WCCC with giving her a strong foundation in child development, which has been essential in her current role as a student clinician. The comprehensive coursework and hands-on experience she received at WCCC provided her with the tools to understand the nuances of typical speech and language development—an essential component in identifying and treating communication disorders. This foundation continues to shape her clinical decision-making and approach to therapy as she moves closer to her professional goals.
A Recent Accomplishment: Passing the Speech-Language Pathology Praxis Exam
Megan recently passed the Speech-Language Pathology Praxis Exam, a major milestone in her journey to becoming a licensed Speech Language Pathologist. This accomplishment represents not only her academic achievement but also her unwavering commitment to the profession. It brings her one step closer to fulfilling her dream of working with children and helping them overcome communication challenges.
Advice for Current and Prospective Students
Megan encourages current and prospective students to take their academic journey one step at a time. “Pursuing higher education can feel overwhelming,” she says, “but the experience goes by quickly, and the sense of accomplishment when you reach your goals is truly invaluable.” She also emphasizes the importance of embracing every learning opportunity and staying focused on your long-term aspirations.
