Jake Mumme, Diesel & Automotive Engine Overhaul Instructor

Meet Jake Mumme

We are excited to spotlight Jake Mumme, our Diesel & Automotive Engine Overhaul Instructor at Washington County Community College. Jake began teaching at WCCC on August 18th and has quickly become a strong presence in the program. As a graduate of WCCC himself, Jake brings a unique perspective to the classroom, combining firsthand experience as a student with real-world mechanical knowledge.

A Day in Jake’s Role

Jake’s favorite part of teaching is mentoring students and helping them better understand their direction in life. He enjoys guiding students as they discover their strengths and build confidence in their abilities. Because Jake’s own educational journey was not a straight path, he is especially passionate about helping students see that there are many ways to reach success.

What Makes Jake’s Program Stand Out

The Diesel & Automotive Engine Overhaul program is built around hands-on learning. Students spend much of their time building, tearing down, and rebuilding engines, gaining a thorough understanding of how each component works together. A key part of the course is the opportunity for students to bring in their own engines to rebuild. While engines are available in the shop, working on their own equipment allows students to connect more deeply with the learning process.

Through this process, students gain hands-on experience with measurement, tolerances, and engine maintenance. Jake is focused on building strong relationships with industry partners to better support students and expand their options after graduation. These connections help open doors to internships and potential job placements, giving students real opportunities to enter the workforce.

Jake’s Journey with Diesel Engines

After graduating from high school, Jake began his education at the University of Maine, where he realized that a traditional university setting was not the right fit for him. He later found his passion at WCCC, graduating from the Powersports Small Engine Technician and Diesel & Automotive Engine Overhaul programs in 2022. His journey allows him to relate closely to students who may still be finding their path. In addition to teaching, Jake continues to work part-time as a mechanic at a boat yard in Eastport, Maine, bringing current industry experience into the classroom.

Outside of Work

When he’s not in the classroom or shop, Jake enjoys spending quality time with his wonderful family. He also loves hands-on projects and mechanical work. He loves getting his hands dirty and is also a big sports fan, especially baseball.

Three Words to Describe Jake

Driven, Approachable, Hands-on

Looking Toward the Future

Jake hopes to continue growing the Diesel & Automotive Engine Overhaul program by expanding opportunities for students and adding more tools and equipment in the shop. He is focused on building a strong foundation for the program and ensuring students graduate with the skills, experience, and connections needed for successful careers.

Thank You, Jake!

Thank you, Jake, for your dedication to WCCC and for supporting students through mentorship and hands-on learning. We’re excited to see the Diesel & Automotive Engine Overhaul program continue to grow under your leadership!
