Free College Program Opens Doors for First-Year Diesel Student from Lebanon, Maine

Thomas Gagnon, Diesel & Automotive Engine Overhaul Student
Meet Thomas Gagnon
Thomas is a first-year student in the Diesel & Automotive Engine Overhaul Program at Washington County Community College. For Thomas, college once felt out of reach — and without the availability of Free College, he says he would not have attended college at all.
Why Free College Mattered
Free College played a major role in Thomas’s decision to attend WCCC. Before enrolling, he didn’t fully see the value of college, but that perspective quickly changed.
“Having free college was definitely a factor in my decision when picking a school,” Thomas shared. “Before, I didn’t really see the value in attending college, but now I appreciate the college experience.”
Building Confidence Through Access
Through the Free College program, Thomas has gained more than tuition support — he’s gained confidence. The opportunity helped him prove to himself that he can succeed in a college environment.
“Free college has increased my confidence,” he said. “It’s shown me that I can be successful in a college environment.”
Removing Financial Barriers
Coming from Lebanon, Maine, Thomas benefits financially from the Free College program. Without the burden of tuition or student loans, he can focus fully on learning rather than worrying about how to pay for school.
“It’s allowed me to save money and not stress about student loans,” Thomas explained. “I don’t have to take as much time off or worry about getting a job just to help pay for classes.”
Hands-On Learning, Real-World Goals
Now preparing for a career as a diesel mechanic, Thomas says the hands-on nature of the Diesel & Automotive Engine Overhaul Program is helping him reach his goals.
“This program helps me pursue what I want to do by teaching and showing me how to work in a real job setting,” he said.
The Impact of Free College at WCCC
Thomas’s story reflects the power of Free College at Washington County Community College — removing barriers, building confidence, and helping students turn career goals into reality.
