Calais, ME — Washington County Community College (WCCC) proudly celebrated the achievements of its Class of 2025 during a heartfelt commencement ceremony held on Friday, May 16 at the Calais High School Gymnasium. Families, friends, faculty, and community leaders gathered in person and online to honor more than 150 graduates receiving degrees and certificates across a range of fields from criminal justice and early childhood education to welding, heavy equipment operations, and human services.

The ceremony opened with a powerful Native American drum performance by the Huntley Brook Singers, who honored the Passamaquoddy tradition. Faculty member Mindy Reynolds followed with stirring renditions of the Canadian and U.S. national anthems.

WCCC President Susan Mingo welcomed attendees with words of pride and inspiration. “Graduates, you have faced challenges with fierce determination and embraced opportunities with heart,” she said. “You are the living proof of our mission to transform lives and enrich communities.”

Among the speakers were Michelle Cook, Student Senate President, who shared her personal journey of perseverance after returning to school following the loss of her father to substance use, and Wayde Carter, a decorated law enforcement veteran and faculty member who gave a moving address on second chances, open doors, and taking ownership. “The knowledge you have gained is powerful, but it is your character and determination that will truly define your impact,” Carter said.

The ceremony also recognized Kolaiah Spooner as the 2025 WCCC Student of the Year. A criminal justice conservation law graduate, Spooner spoke about her growth as a student and leader, her upcoming training at the National Park Ranger Academy in Colorado, and the role of faith and perseverance in her journey. “What makes us successful is not just the degree, but the growth, the mistakes, and the relationships that shaped us,” she said.

Keynote speaker Charles Rudelitch, Executive Director of Sunrise County Economic Council, delivered a message rooted in hope and local pride. “You’ve invested in yourselves, and that investment strengthens our entire community,” he said. “We need your talent, energy, and ideas right here in Washington County.”

The event also honored retiring faculty members Darin McGaw, Academic Dean, and Bion Holbrook of the Diesel & Automotive program for their many years of dedicated service.

The ceremony concluded with the official conferral of degrees and certificates, symbolizing a new beginning for the graduates. As tassels were turned and applause echoed through the gymnasium, WCCC reaffirmed its commitment to student success and community transformation.
