Kendall Wood-Coffin, 2026 WCCC Student of the Year

Calais, Maine – Washington County Community College (WCCC) is proud to announce Kendall Wood-Coffin as the 2026 Student of the Year, recognizing her strong academic performance, leadership, service, and steady determination. A 2025 graduate of Machias Memorial High School, Kendall quickly made a meaningful impact on the WCCC campus.

Kendall enrolled at WCCC as a Business Management student, choosing the College for its proximity to her hometown and its financial accessibility through the Maine Free College scholarship. Since enrolling, she has developed a strong sense of independence and direction, establishing herself as a meaningful contributor to the campus community. Through her presence in the classroom and her engagement across campus, she has helped foster a welcoming and thoughtful learning environment while serving as a positive example for her peers.

Academically, Kendall demonstrated a commitment to excellence early in her college experience, earning Dean’s List recognition in her first semester. Faculty consistently note her thoughtful questions, meaningful insights, and active participation, all of which contribute to a deeper and more engaging classroom experience for those around her.

English and Communications Instructor Nicholas Johnson shared, “Kendall is a genuine delight to have in class. Students like her elevate the learning environment for everyone involved. Her contributions extend beyond academics, helping to create a welcoming and intellectually curious atmosphere.”

Within her program of study, Kendall has distinguished herself through consistent engagement and a willingness to contribute to class discussions in a way that supports both her own learning and that of her peers. Her ability to connect ideas and encourage dialogue reflects a maturity and academic curiosity that stands out among her classmates.

In addition to her academic contributions, Kendall is actively involved in campus life as the student senate treasurer, demonstrating leadership and a commitment to student representation. She regularly participates in EXPLORE student engagement events and balances her academic responsibilities with early morning shifts working in the campus dining hall, a role that highlights her strong work ethic, reliability, and time management skills.

Dr. Tyler Stoldt, Dean of Enrollment Management and Student Services, emphasized the significance of the award, stating, “Kendall leads in a quiet but powerful way. She contributes meaningfully to both the academic and social fabric of the college, and her consistency, humility, and work ethic reflect the very best of what we hope to see in our students.”

Kendall’s journey reflects determination and perseverance. She did not initially expect to attend college due to financial challenges, but through hard work, including working throughout the summer and applying for scholarships, she made her college education possible. She leads by example, supports those around her, and approaches her responsibilities with focus and purpose.

When reflecting on what being named Student of the Year means to her, Kendall shared that it represents being recognized for consistently putting her best foot forward each day. She takes pride in her ability to balance a busy schedule while maintaining a strong work ethic and positive outlook. She defines leadership as someone who is willing to consider all perspectives and do what is best for their community.

Looking ahead, Kendall plans to return to WCCC for her second year and complete her Business Management degree. Her long-term goal is to own her own business focused on training other business owners and entrepreneurs, with the vision of contributing to economic growth in Downeast Maine. Outside of her academic and work responsibilities, Kendall enjoys spending time in the campus weight room, playing pool in the student lounge, and engaging in outdoor activities such as hiking and gardening.

Washington County Community College celebrates Kendall Wood-Coffin’s accomplishments and recognizes her as a leader and role model who continues to inspire those around her.  President Susan Mingo stated “we are extremely proud of Kendall’s many accomplishments since joining WCCC. This recognition distinguishes her amongst her peers and we are confident she will contribute as a business owner to the economic and community development of the area upon her graduation”.

Kendall will be recognized for this distinguished honor on April 15th with an in-person ceremony at Maple Hill Farm in Hallowell beginning at 10:30a.m. followed by tea at the Blaine House.
