Purpose: The HVAC/R Associate in Applied Science degree is designed to provide students with necessary foundational knowledge to enter the HVAC/R field. This foundational knowledge consists of being versed in each aspect of the HVAC/R sector. Graduates of this program will have the skills needed to work in light commercial and residential settings. The content of the program will enable students to acquire the entry-level skills to repair, diagnose, maintain and install oil heating systems such as oil-fired furnaces and boilers, as well as tanks and piping; LP and natural gas fired heating systems such as furnaces, boilers, space heaters, as well as propane tanks and piping; knowledge of codes and Maine State Laws and Rules and how to apply them to each application; refrigeration cycle and EPA regulations, as well as a specialty in heat pump installations and maintenance

Career Opportunities: Graduates of the program will be qualified and able to be licensed to work as a Field Technician in all aspects of the HVAC/R trade, as an Outside Salesperson for wholesale companies such as F.W. Webb, System Design Engineer, Code Enforcement Officer for state or local government and more!

Program Educational Outcomes: Upon completion of the program, the graduate is prepared to: 

1. Identify and apply the basic theories, principles, and practices of the HVAC/R trade: including regulations, nomenclature, and best practices for customer service and system maintenance
2. Identify system components and controls of oil, gas, and refrigeration appliances.
3. Identify and systematically troubleshoot common problems and components.
4. Identify and adhere to regulatory and safety protocols and standards in the HVAC/R trade.
5. Evaluate career pathways in the HVAC/R industry, weighting the pros and cons, rewards, and demands to think critically and make informed decisions.
6. Use best practices when working with customers, using proper techniques for good customer relations.
7. Ability to complete the Maine State exam for Journeyman Oil Burner License
8. Complete the Maine State exam for Appliance Service and Connection gas license
